If you click on the edit this page-register at the top of the page, an entry box containng the text of the page will appear. The text will be largely plain text interspersed with some special commands, which are interpreted by the Wiki-Software to generate links, lists, tables and other text formatting (see box on the right).

The button Save change saves the changes. Prior to saving, always enter a short summary of the changes in the Summary entry field please and check the changes by pressing Show preview, which displays the modified page before it is saved.

By ticking the box This is a minor edit, you summarise spelling corrections and other small format changes. The entry in recent changes will be followed by the letter m (minor edit).

By ticking the box Watch this page, the page is added to your personal watchlist. This makes it easy to track changes on particular pages.

For trial purposes you can open a sandbox. Basically you should be brave - you cannot destroy anything. All earlier versions of an article can be restored easily. That should be a comfort for brave beginners.

Locked pages

Some pages, e.g. the main page, are protected and can only be edited by administrators. These pages don't have an edit this page register, but one labelled view source instead. The same applies, if the Wiki has been switched to read only mode for system maintenance.

Signing discussions

To identify your contribution in a discussion, it makes sense to sign your contribution by typing four tilde symbols, usually preceded by two dashes (--~~~~).

Your signature with timestamp

This can also be achieved by pressing the "Your signature with timestamp" button at the top of the edit window.

On saving the discussion entry, the tildes will be replaced by your signature and timestamp. e.g.: --John E. Wulff 12:48, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
